Game news Fortnite Impostors: Among Us developers not thrilled with this new mode
Fortnite hosted the 17.40 update yesterday. It introduces a new mode called Impostors, which pits members of the Institute against traitors who must be unmasked. A mode that is inspired a lot by Among Us … and this inspiration has not gone unnoticed by the developers of the latter.
Besides Wonder Woman and the Free Guy played by Ryan Reynolds, Fortnite update 17.40 has integrated Impostors mode. In it a team of impostors must destroy the Node undetected, while the opposing team (members of the Institute) must unmask the traitors to protect it. A concept inspired by the Among Us game developed by Innersloth, itself inspired by Loup-Garou de Thiercelieux. An inspiration not to the taste of some members of the studio, who expressed themselves on Twitter.
First, Gary Porter is speaking. Unity Developer on Among Us, he seems surprised on the similarities between the two cards :
A little later in the day, it is Victorian Tran who speaks on the subject. The “Community Director“wonders about the absence of a partnership :
like game mechanics fine, those shouldn’t be gatekept, but at the very least even different themes or terminology makes things more interesting? 😕

It would have been really, really cool to do a collaboration haha. It’s just a bad time for indie gaming (…) Making similar game mechanics is okay, they shouldn’t be confidential. But at least doing it on a different theme or varying the terminologies doesn’t make things more interesting?
An opinion shared by the co-founder of Innersloth who clarifies his thinking on knowledge sharing in industry :
We didn’t patent the Among Us mechanics. I don’t think that leads to a healthy game industry. Is it really that hard to put 10% more effort into putting your own spin on it though?

We haven’t patented the Among Us mechanics. I don’t think it’s healthy for the industry. Still, is it really hard to go 10% more to add your own sauce?
