Bayonetta 3 is coming to Nintendo Switch in 2022, developer PlatinumGames and publisher Sega said following a four-minute gameplay trailer shown during Thursday’s Nintendo Direct.
The trailer, as heavy with cinematics as it is with in-game footage, shows Bayonetta coming to the rescue against a kaiju-esque enemy who is overwhelming the local defense. Bayonetta and her trademark pistol-heels arrive on the scene to take care of things — mainly through another kaiju that the witch summons.
Thursday’s trailer is the first we’ve heard of the Bayonetta sequel since it was announced in 2017 as a Switch exclusive. Since then, PlatinumGames had been mum on Bayonetta 3, promising to show more only when the game is ready. The only launch guidance the studio is giving is next year.
Sega and PlatinumGames brought the first two Bayonetta games to Nintendo Switch in 2018, bringing with them amiibo support and local wireless cooperative play.
The first Bayonetta was released for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in 2009 by Sega. Bayonetta 2 was picked up by Nintendo and released as a Wii U exclusive in 2014. The games were later remastered in 4K — alongside another PlatinumGames action hit, Vanquish — for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One to celebrate their 10th anniversary year.
