A sealed copy of ‘Super Mario 64’ sells for a record-breaking $1.56 million at auction.

The copy of the popular N64 game was brand new from the factory.

This year, Nintendo games have commanded astronomical prices at auctions. Just days after a rare edition of The Legend of Zelda reached an all-time high of $870,000, an N64 classic has nearly quadrupled that price. Over the weekend, a totally sealed Super Mario 64 sold for a staggering $1.56 million.

That may sound like an absurd price for a best-selling game owned by millions, but the auctioneer claims the copy is in immaculate condition, setting it distinct from your dusty old copy. The boxed game received a 9.8 A++ Sealed rating on the Wata Scale, according to Heritage Auctions. This implies it has been impeccably kept in the same state as it left the manufacturer. These highly rated games are sometimes referred to as “Case Fresh.”

Add to that Super Mario 64’s cultural significance as the plumber’s first real 3D adventure and a tremendously successful launch title for the adored N64 platform, and it’s easy to see why it surpassed the seven-figure threshold. By comparison, a near-perfect copy of Super Mario Bros. for the NES sold for a record $660,000 in April, before being surpassed by the Legend of Zelda sale. While a Wata 9.4 A+ Sealed copy of Final Fantasy III recently for $96,000.
