XDefiant from Tom Clancy is a free, team-based FPS

The factions are based on characters from all the Clancy games in Ubisoft.

Ubisoft’s XDefiant, a free game that it revealed on Monday, is delving deeper into the Clancyver. The first person multiplayer shooter will pit six character teams (or Defiants) in a number of game modes. There is a focus on gunplay, though you are also capable of using characteristics, abilities and “ultras” – similar to the ultimate in other games – based on your faction.

XDefiant is a crossover between the different Clancy franchises of Ubisoft. The Wolves (inspired by Tom Clancy’s ghost recon), Echelon (Splinter cell) and Outcasts and Cleaners are the initial groups (The Division). More challenges will be added and drawn from different characters and abilities “from and beyond the Tom Clancy universe,” Ubisoft said.

The creative leaders of Ubisoft San Francisco developed XDefant, which featured “fast pace firefighting with punk rock moshpits.” You can adjust the loadout of your Defiant (including a primary and secondary weapons, attachments and device). When you respond, you can modify your setup to help you adapt to what happens in a match. It sounds like you can get the best out of the game for both casual and competitive players.

Overwatch and Valorant are clear echos with plenty of Clancyverse flavor. Managing producer Mark Rubin had previously worked on Call of Duty Infinity Ward games, and XDefiant also features some clear DNA from that franchise.

XDefiant arrives at Xbox One, PlayStation, Xbox Series X/S, PS5, PC, Google Stadia, Amazon Luna, and Ubisoft Connect with full interaction, expected from the beginning. The game is still pretty early, but Ubisoft invites the public to try it out. The first public PC test begins on 5 August and you can register for participation via the XDefiant website.
