An upgrade not free at all

In the same vein as Dark Souls and others from From Software, Mortal Shell is an action-oriented role-playing game in which the player is often made to die. Recently available in the PS Plus catalog, the title of Cold Symmetry is therefore a good alternative for those who want to try a game of this type without investing too much. But Sony subscribers who have the PS5 could not enjoy it in the best possible conditions, at least not for free. On Twitter, the official game page confirmed that it was not possible to benefit from the version improvements. next gen :

The Mortal Shell version of PlayStation Plus will only be the original version of PlayStation 4, also backward compatible playable on PlayStation 5.

After releasing their game for the first time in August 2020, the Mortal Shell team decided to release an improved version of the title. Entitled Mortal Shell: Enhanced Edition, this version integrates 4K visuals, improved textures, compatibility with DualSense as well as a rate of 60 images per second. To benefit from the upgrade, it will then be necessary to pay € 29.99.

Greedfall and Final Fantasy VII: Remake in the same boat

This is not the first time that subscribers cannot enjoy the PS5 version of a game included in the PS + catalog “for free”: this is for example the case with Final Fantasy VII: Remake, including an improved version. released on June 10 with the INTERmission DLC. A situation that is not limited to the role-playing game of Square Enix. This summer, it was the team behind the game Greedfall who indicated that the bundled version of the game on the PlayStation Plus was not eligible for the PS5 upgrade.

A Sony bias? In any case, such a policy differs from that of its direct competitor, Microsoft: Mortal Shell and Greedfall are both available on Game Pass and are compatible with the Smart Delivery, the upgrade system crossgen from Xbox. That’s good, Sony wants to change strategy.
